Robert, 65, is a Marine veteran originally from Spartanburg, South Carolina. After working for Union Pacific Railroad and then running a painting business in Colorado, he eventually lost both jobs and fell into financial hardship. He receives only $178 a month in disability and recently had a triple bypass following a heart attack six months ago.
His time in the military shaped his character, but his kindness comes from his upbringing. Even while unhoused, he’s more concerned about helping others than receiving help himself. He expresses frustration at people who reject assistance but also understands it comes from trauma and mistrust.
