Melody is a 57-year-old Denver native who has been unhoused for the past 7–8 years. She lived in her family home for most of her life, but after her mother passed, her sister took possession of the house through what Melody describes as a “quick deed,” selling it out from under her. The loss of that home, which had been in the family for 100 years, was devastating and led directly to her homelessness.
She speaks with fire and conviction about the injustice of being ignored and dehumanized, despite being a lifelong resident. She proposes a clear solution: if she were mayor, she’d create dedicated housing for unhoused people—actual apartments, not shelters, where people can have a door, a key, and safety. She dreams of a city that recognizes the humanity of the people living on its streets.
